Great art curriculum for all ages; Beyond the Stick Figure Art School Review

A great art curriculum for all ages, home school, OR just for fun! What a great way to spend time at home these days.

With this being our first year homeschooling, researching art curriculum was on my to-do list but something I hadn’t gotten done. I would look at the art they created in previous year’s art classes and worried they needed more than I could provide. Then,Beyond the Stick Figure Complete Drawing Course PLUS 3 Bonus Courses.” came up for review. This curriculum from Beyond the Stick Figure Art School includes 55 drawing lessons, 15 pen and ink lessons, 52 watercolour lessons, 24 acrylic lessons, and 30 3D design lessons!

This curriculum is for all ages (adults too) and only one life-time subscription is needed for the entire family. The short video lessons take participants step-by-step through each section. Sally, the course developer, earned her art degree from Loughborough College of Art and Design in England. Although she lives in the US now, we love her British accent and can’t say “drawing” without imitating her these days.

I need to be honest so our readers know how we experienced the product. Before I go further, I want to state that we definitely plan to continue using this program through summer break and into the next school year! The whole course takes about a year to complete if you’re doing a lesson a day. We have one much less interested in art and one really into it, so we’re balancing our time. It will take quite a while to get through the full curriculum.

We had various issues navigating the online platform, but Sally worked hard on her end to fix them. One of our biggest obstacles was obtaining the supplies for the entire course. We were supposed to review several lessons from every course, but the list wasn’t broken down into needs for each course or lesson. We also couldn’t move freely from one course to the next. For example, you must complete all of step-by-step drawing in order to move to the pen and ink course. You have the option to mark a lesson complete without doing the lesson, but I honestly didn’t have the organization or time to do that.

I DO understand the reasons she has participants move through each lesson in order, because her goal is to teach them to think and create like an artist. I LOVE that part. Our children are finding circles and dots and straight and curved lines everywhere now.

However, with our governor’s shelter-in-place order and for the safety and protection of our children, we have not been going to craft and supply stores. I’m not even sure they’ve been open. I took the materials list and did what I could to gather them on Amazon for three students, but the cost was astronomical. We would have had to buy multiple things in bulk. With not knowing when they would need what supply along with my husband and I at home not drawing income right now, we simply couldn’t justify purchasing the full materials list.

We did purchase two packs of the recommended Prismacolor art markers and LOVE them! These markers have much more pigment, Sally explains, than generic ones and they just burst with color. She is so right.

We have been making our way through the drawing course but are super excited about the upcoming courses as well. We’ve been taking our time. When we got to the lesson where you draw circles and then fill in the white space around it, we wanted to park there for a while. We now just sit around relaxing with this exercise together. Our daughter has even made a few cards and mailed them to her friends using that basic technique.

The following photos show the beautiful pigment of the Prismacolor markers and some of our work with straight lines, circles, and curves.

While we didn’t get to review the other courses and we’re honestly not very far into the drawing course, we do love this program very much and plan to continue using it.

Since I feel like our review is incomplete, I urge you to click on the image below which will take you to the Homeschool Review Crew page. There you will find many reviews by other families who’s completed projects in multiple courses are outstanding! See how they experienced the curriculum and if this is the answer you’ve been looking for in a complete homeschool art curriculum.

  1. Thank you for the review. We love to make our students happy, so here are some tweaks we have made based on recent reviews:
    1. All course videos are open and do not require sequential completion–although we still recommend it.
    2. We contacted Vimeo and they have improved the video experience by installing volume control and full screen options on all videos.
    3. We added more options to drawing part 2 to help it move along more quickly for younger students.
