Simply Coding for kids, a NEW addition to our homeschool we’re really enjoying!

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

We were so excited to try the “Coding for Kids Annual Membership” from Simply Coding, a computer science curriculum perfect for our “techy” 12-year-old son. Simply Coding is a self-paced program where children can learn to design games, websites, apps, and more. Using video, written instruction, and gaming medium, kids learn to write their own codes in text editor and host their projects online.

Simply Coding offers an ANNUAL membership for one student or a family pass for three student accounts. As a member you have unlimited access to more than 300 hours of interactive online courses that include

*JavaScript

*Python

*3D Game Design

*Adobe

*Microsoft

*Prezi

*YouTube

*Google applications for kids

*Internet Safety

and much more! The program is designed for students age 11-18, but with beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, adults like me with very little coding experience can definitely benefit as well. They offer a 10-day free trial to see if their product is a good fit for your family, so you can get a feel for the system and structure before committing to anything.

Once the student logs in, they are taken to their “Course Pathways and Access” panel. Each topic has multiple classes and levels within each module.

They can move through the lessons in order, or they can move around to learn what most interests them. Our son is really interested in designing games, so that was what he started working on right away. As you can see in the following photo, he used his new-found skills to ask Dad if he can get Minecraft for the computer.

Unfortunately, right as we were assigned this review, our son who wanted to try this fell violently ill. He was quite sick nearly the whole month of September and ended up hospitalized in the pediatric ward for almost a week. He had one surgery and is awaiting a second. Needless to say, this completely threw off the time he spent with this product during the review period and we didn’t get to experience it as much as we would have liked to share a more in-depth review.

When he first logged in our son felt like he didn’t understand how the program worked, but he was starting from zero coding experience. It wasn’t long though, until the aha moments started happening. He has had SO much fun with the program these past few days now that he is starting to feel better. Simply Coding is something he can focus on as he continues to recover from this surgery and the next, giving him something positive and creative to do with his lengthy “down time.”

His comments have been, “Mom! Check this out!” “Mom, this is SO cool!” “I can’t wait to send this to the cousins!” When it’s worth “showing off to the cousins” in our family, it’s a pretty good gig!

Computer sciences and coding are definitely not my area of expertise as a mom/teacher, but something I believe can be invaluable for our children in this ever-advancing technological age. Because of the program’s design, Simply Coding allows for independent learning without the parent/caregiver needing to have working knowledge of the content. I’m thankful for curriculum like Simply Coding that can help guide our children in innovative ways, but who also value and teach Internet safety as well.

Below are screenshots that show the many courses available through simply coding. There’s one screenshot for the classes available in the four different sections.

Overall, even with the limited time he spent with the product due to his illness, Simply Coding has already been an incredible addition to our homeschool now and will be going forward.
