Preschool and Elementary Music Education at Home, an easy, engaging program for the family

The Musik at Home Membership we received through the Homeschool Review Crew has been delighting not only our smallest learners, but the whole family as well! Musik at Home is a complete early childhood music education program with more than 400 streaming videos for music development, music literacy, and learning instruments, and one membership covers the whole family. Founder and instructor Kathryn Brunner is an early childhood music educator.

I’ll share more about the program and what’s available below, but here’s why I’m so excited. We have a preschooler who is incredibly gifted, but who also needs active and engaging lessons with any subject. These videos have done exactly that for her!

We also have a toddler foster son who, when he came to us did NOT want us to sing or dance or read books with him, things our family does ALL the time. We’ve been able to engage him in books, and now these videos have him dancing and singing and giggling with absolute excitement. I wish so desperately I could share videos of the him participating in the sessions, but I am not at liberty to do so at this time. His favorite is when we all buzz around dancing to the Flight of the Bumblebee. He always wants to follow up the activity by reading together, “Five Little Honeybees,” which culminates in a delightful experience with everything he resisted when he came. Truly this program has been a tremendous blessing for our family!

I taught preschool for several years and this program matches or exceeds the weekly music program we had in person there. I love that there’s no commute, you can add it in where and how it fits for your family’s schedule. You can go to your favorite lessons over and over again when you wish. They even have an app for your phone or tablet! You can save favorites to your list and you can download videos to stream offline. You do need a good internet connection to stream the videos.

They give suggestions on the website for “DIY” instruments, like wooden spoons for rhythm sticks, rice or beans in a sealed container for shakers, and a napkin or lightweight scarf for scarves. We went ahead and ordered the instruments because I knew we were going to use them. Instruments, lyrics books, and CDs, are all available for purchase through their website.

The program is geared for children ages 1-8, but our 9-year-old LOVES participating and leading the younger children. Although our children are no longer babies, they laughed and laughed watching the baby classes, and kept asking me to play them again. The lessons are designed to have a caring adult helping direct and engage the students.

Some of the categories and classes include:

We love that you can choose which instruments you want to work with for the day, because sometimes the children really wanted rhythm sticks, other times they wanted shakers or scarves. It is nice to be able to jump around the clearly marked categories to suit our mood of the day. Coming this fall they are adding a “Family Music for Christmas” class, “featuring the five major themes of Advent with musical concepts to go with the most beloved Christmas Carols.” We can’t wait to give that a try!

Our family feels like we can confidently recommend Musik at Home. To read how other Review Crew families experienced this product, click on the image below to be taken to the Review Crew page.
